The American Film Institute (AFI) announced its list of top ten films of the year on Sunday.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Frost/Nixon, Frozen River, Gran Torino, Iron Man, Milk, WALL-E, Wendy and Lucy and The Wrestler were the organization's 2008 picks.

Much buzzed-about movies like Revolutionary Road, The Reader and Doubt were noticeably absent, along with the National Board of Review and British Independent Film Award winner Slumdog Millionaire. The latter did not, however, meet criteria for consideration, which says that a contender must have "significant creative and/or production elements from the United States."

AFI also revealed its top ten TV programs of 2008, which included Breaking Bad, In Treatment, John Adams, Life, Lost, Mad Men, The Office, Recount, The Shield and The Wire.

The AFI Awards are chosen by a 13-person jury composed of "scholars, film artists, critics and AFI trustees."
