An autopsy on former New York Giants safety Tyler Sash revealed that he died of an accidental overdose.
KCCI noted that the Iowa State Medical Examiner's office concluded that the 27-year-old died as a result of mixing two pain medications. The office also cited a dislocated shoulder and other chronic pain as contributing factors.
Sash’s official cause of death is listed as an "accidental mixed drug toxicity involving methadone and hydrocodone” and other "significant conditions.”
Testing to determine whether or not he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, the brain disease caused by repeated head trauma, will be done and available over the next eight to 12 months.
As we previously reported, Sash was found dead in his Oskaloosa, Iowa home last month. An autopsy done at the time did not include the laboratory results needed for completion to determine the manner of death.
Sash played his college ball at Iowa and was drafted by the Giants in the sixth round. He played for the G-Men for two years and was a member of the team that defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. The following year he was suspended by the league for four games when he tested positive for Adderall. The Giants cut him before start of the 2013 regular season.
