It took 1990s nostalgia to finally stop Ridley Scott’s The Martian at the box office. Sony’s Goosebumps, starring Jack Black as author R.L. Stine, took a slow weekend at the box office and barely kept The Martian from a third week at No. 1.

Goosebumps kicked off its run with $23.5 million. While that was shy of expectations, the film still has a chance at a really good run for the next two weeks. According to Box Office Mojo, the film was screened at 3,501 locations and earned a good A CinemaScore grade from audiences. It won’t face another family friendly movie until The Peanuts Movie opens on Nov. 6.

The Martian fell to $21.5 million in its third weekend. The 20th Century Fox film is now up to $143.8 million domestically and won the international box office, notes Rentrak data. The film is up to $319.2 million worldwide already.

Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, released by Disney and starring Tom Hanks, came in third with $15.3 million. Guillermo Del Toro’s pricey Crimson Peak didn’t do as well, only grossing $12.8 million in its first weekend. The R rating probably didn’t help.

Faith-based film Woodlawn opened to $4.1 million from 1,533 locations.

Pan tumbled even further, only making $5.8 million in its second weekend.

Universal’s Steve Jobs only played in 60 theaters this weekend, but it cracked the Top 12 with an astonishing $1.5 million.
