It’s been a long time since we heard that SyFy and Warner Bros. TV were developing a Superman prequel series set on Krypton, but apparently it is still in the works. Writer/producer David S. Goyer finally gave an update on the project, which is in development.
News of the project first surfaced in December 2014, when SyFy sounded really excited about exploring the world of Krypton before it is destroyed and Jor-El sends Kal-El off to Earth. However, there had been no news on the project since it was announced, so most assumed that it was probably dead.
However, in an interview with Collider to promote the new season of Da Vinci’s Demons, Goyer brought up Krypton. He said that the project would be set “200 years before” the events in Man of Steel, so there won’t be overlap with characters we know. Syfy is also looking at the production costs, which could be pricey for a show that doesn’t take place on Earth.
“In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments,” Goyer explained to Collider. “It will definitely, should we make the show there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, spectacle, in the way that the film will be, but we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”
Krypton will be executive produced by Goyer and Ian Goldberg, who has worked on Once Upon A Time and the short-lived FlashForward.
Goyer wrote Man of Steel and also worked on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He also developed NBC’s Constantine.
