Monty Python & The Holy Grail, one of the funniest - or at least, most ridiculous - movies ever made, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Of course, this means yet another home video release, but at least the Pythons have something new to make it worthwhile.
The new Blu-ray and DVD editions will include a 14-minute reel of extra animation made by co-director Terry Gilliam that didn’t make it into the final cut of the film. Gilliam also provided commentary for the animation, to explain what his inspiration was and why the scenes were ultimately cut.
In typical Gilliam fashion, he actually admits at the beginning of the reel that this might be the only reason to buy the new edition of The Holy Grail. Then again, it was the Pythons themselves who posted this on YouTube for free, so it kind of takes that reason away.
Monty Python & The Holy Grail, released in 1975, was the first of three completely original films made by the Pythons. Initially, the film wasn’t too well received and didn’t make much money, but has now been embraced by critics and fans as one of the best comedies ever.
