Oscar winner Denzel Washington is returning to television but he won't be seen on screen. Instead, Washington is set to direct an upcoming episode of ABC's popular Grey's Anatomy.

TV Line reported that Washington will be directing episode 9 of season 12.

Stacy McKee wrote the eposide, which is set to go into production later this month. His relationship with the show links back to his longtime friendship with Grey's director and executive producer Debbie Allen.

This will mark the first time that Washington is directing a television show, he has previously directed two feature films, Antwone Fisher and The Great Debaters.

The actor is joining the show during a time of change after main character Derek Shepherd was killed off last season. The question that remains is how Meredith will move on following his death and if she will find love again on the show. E! News reported that creator Shonda Rhimes is still developing how this character is going to change.

"I have not planned to [introduce a new love interest for her] and that's not really the focus of what we're doing with her right now," Rhimes said. "Meredith is in a rebirth and she's evolving. I'm watching the character do what the character's doing and I'll see where it goes."
