Authorities in Mississippi have said that former Alabama Crimson Tide running back Altee Tenpenny died in a single-car accident Tuesday evening.

The Associated Press reported that Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to the scene after the crash and said that the 20-year-old was traveling on Highway 1 toward Arkansas when he hit a road sign. The vehicle then flipped over, hit a pole and ejected Tenpenny from his 2008 Dodge Charger.

He was taken to a hospital but died from his injuries.

In two seasons with the Tides, Tenpenny had 218 rushing yards with one touchdown on 48 carries. He later transferred to UNLV, but was dismissed from the team for a rules violation. He then went to Nicholls State, but was reportedly arrested on a weapons charge and was suspended indefinitely.

After news of his death broke, former teammates and friends posted messages via social media.

Nick Saban, his former coach at Alabama, also expressed condolences to Tenpenny’s family during a press conference.
