Mel Gibson already has Andrew Garfield for his for his new WWII film, and he has now added another experienced actor.
Hugo Weaving is famous for playing Elrond in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Agent Smith in The Matrix trilogy. Now Weaving has joined Garfield in Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, Variety reports.
Garfield is playing Desmond T. Doss, a medic and the first conscientious objector to win the Congressional Medal of Honor after saving dozens of soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. Weaving will portray his father, Tom Doss.
The film is based off a true story and filming started a few weeks ago in Australia. Hacksaw Ridge will be Gibson’s first directorial effort since Apocalypto in 2006. The film was also nominated for an Oscar.
Rounding out the cast is a mix of Australian and international talent, including Richard Roxburgh, Luke Pegler, Richard Pyros, Ben Mingay, Firass Dirani, Nico Cortez, Michael Sheasby, Goran Kleut, Jacob Warner, Harry Greenwood, Damien Thomlinson, Ben O’Toole, Benedict Hardie, Robert Morgan, Ori Pfeffer, Milo Gibson and Nathaniel Buzolic, The Wrap reported.
Cross Creek is financing the project with Bill Mechanic’s Pandemonium Films and David Permut’s Permut Presentations along with Bruce Davie and Paul Currie producing. No release date has been announced.
