Kate Hudson is opening up about ending her engagement to Muse frontman Matthew Bellamy, with whom she shares 4-year-old son Bingham with.

They announced their split in Dec. 2014, but they have continued to co-parent together and even go on vacations together as a family.

"Relationships ending are painful, and you can choose to carry that or you can choose to reframe it," Hudson told Allure. "If Matt and I had a great relationship, we would still be together, but we chose to move on because we had different visions of how we wanted to live our lives."

Hudson also shares 11-year-old son, Ryder, with her ex-husband Chris Robinson. She talked about her own experience being raised by her stepfather, Kurt Russell, and how that relationship is important.

“Being someone who has come from a broken family and has a stepfather, I really benefited from having that very consistent [presence] in my life," she said. "It's something I am mindful of and want in my life."

She called their split a “seamless transition,” mostly because they’re focusing on the kids’ needs. "We said, 'We need to try to create something for the kids where they feel like they're gaining something rather than losing something,’” she said.

Hudson has since been linked to Nick Jonas.
