Laverne Cox is heading to FOX’s made-for-TV musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
According to FOX, Cox is set to play Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a cross-dressing scientist. Tim Curry made the role famous in the original film from 1975.
“I am so excited to be a part of #RockHorror legacy. #DontDreamItBeIt,” Cox tweeted after the news broke.
“The Rocky Horror Picture Show follows sweethearts Janet Weiss and Brad Majors, who stumble upon Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s bizarre abode. Frank-N-Furter, a sexually ambiguous flirtatious alien mad-scientist, is holding an annual, Transylvanian science convention to showcase the birth of Rocky Horror – a fit, attractive man created solely to fulfill Frank's desires,” FOX’s press release said.
Emmy winner Kenny Ortega, best known for High School Musical, is set to direct, choreograph and executive produce.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is still distributed in theaters for select midnight screenings, and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. FOX had plans to remake the class in 2002 for the 30th anniversary, but they were put on hold.
The remake is going to premiere in fall 2016.
