The lack of female directors in the superhero genre is currently a widely discussed topic around the internet. Lexi Alexander is the director of 2008’s Punisher: War Zone. She is the only woman to helm a superhero film.
In a recent interview with Vulture, she gives her comments as to why there are not more female directors in the industry.
“I think in industries riddled with bias, you tend to hire women only if their previous work is very masculine, which is hilarious given that this is not how male directors are chosen. … Women have to be ‘one of the boys’ to get in on the superhero business, whereas male directors don’t have to have any proof on their résumé that they can deliver hardcore action,” Alexander said.
As of right now the much anticipated Wonder Woman movie is likely to be directed by Patty Jenkins, Cinema Blend reports. Jenkins will be the second woman to direct a major superhero movie.
As for Alexander, she is an advocate for women’s rights in Hollywood and is very outspoken about her ideas. She will be directing this week’s episode of the popular TV show Arrow and will continue to fight for what she believes in and what women deserve.
