A team from New York is going to the World Series and it’s not the New York Yankees.
The New York Mets defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-3 Wednesday night completing a four-game sweep of the National League Championship series and are going to the World Series.
Lucas Duda hit a three-run homerun in the first inning and a two-run double in the second. He tied the Mets single-game postseason RBI record with five. Travis D’Arnuad also homered for the Mets in the first inning. Center fielder Yoenis Cespedes left the game with soreness in his left shoulder, according to the Associated Press. However, he should be ready for the World Series.
The Mets never trailed against the Cubs and are going to the World Series for the first time since 2000.
"This is a long time coming," Mets pitcher David Wright said. "We've been through some bad times. We've been through Septembers where you're just playing out the schedule, and that's no fun. To be able to completely reverse that 180 and now celebrate and get a chance to go to the World Series, I wish I could bottle it all. I really do. That's an emotion I'll never forget."
The star of the NLCS was Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy. He went 4-5 with two RBI’s, a run scored and homered in the eighth inning which ended the game for the Cubs. Murphy has homered in six consecutive playoff games, which is a new MLB record. He finished the NLCS hitting .529 with four homeruns, a double, and six RBIs, according to the New York Daily News and was named the NLCS MVP.
The Mets will play either the Toronto Blue Jays or the Kansas City Royals in the World Series, which starts Tuesday night.
