Generations of children didn’t grow up with H.R. Pufnstuf, but Nickelodeon and the show’s original creators, Sid and Marty Krofft, are making sure that this doesn’t happen to the next generation. Over 45 years after going off air, the beloved character is making a comeback.
Nickelodeon announced on Tuesday that the Kroffts’ current show, Mutt & Stuff has received an order for another 20 episodes. The network has also ordered a special, H.R. Pufnstuf Comes To Mutt & Stuff, which will air early next year.
“H.R. Pufnstuf was the first TV show my brother and I created, so it has always held a special place in our hearts,” Marty Krofft said in a statement. “Our fans constantly ask us to bring back Pufnstuf, and we feel the vibrant world of Mutt & Stuff is the perfect setting to revitalize these colorful characters and build excitement for new fans.”
H.R. Pufnstuf debuted in 1969 on NBC and only had 17 episodes. But it has become a cult classic, especially among adults who grew up watching it.
Mutt & Stuff debuted on Nickelodeon earlier this year and is about a school for dogs and stars Calvin Millan and his dad, Dog Whisperer star Cesar Millan. Calvin’s best friend on the show is a giant dog named Stuff, whose uncle is H.R. Pufnstuf.
