Disgraced sprint runner Oscar Pistorius is set to be released from prison next week.
BBC noted that the Paralympian is set to be released on house arrest Tuesday, Oct. 20, after serving about 12 months of his five-year prison sentence for the shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
This news comes a week after a panel upheld Justice Minister Michael Masutha’s decision that Pistorius, 28, remain in prison rather than be moved to house arrest.
The former Olympian was found guilty of culpable homicide last year for shooting Steenkamp through a bathroom door. Throughout the trial he maintained that he mistook the model for an intruder.
After the culpable homicide charge, which is equivalent to manslaughter, prosecutors requested to appeal for a murder charge and ultimately a harsher prison sentence. That request was granted and a hearing on it is scheduled for next month.
Pistorius, a double-amputee, was once an admired athlete in South Africa and came to international prominence when he ran against able-bodied athletes in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Steenkamp’s parents have said that they are troubled by his release, but know nothing will bring back their daughter.
