The Philadelphia Phillies have announced the hiring of Matt Klentak as the club’s team vice president and 11th general manager.

The Associated Press noted that at 35, Klentak becomes the youngest general manger in the Phillies' history.

“I am honored to be named general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies,” Klentak said in a statement. “This franchise has a rich history, owners who are committed to winning every single day, and passionate and knowledgeable fans who support the team.  They should know that they have my tireless commitment to winning a championship.”

Klentak is replacing Ruben Amaro Jr. who was let go last month.

Around the same time the Phils hired Klentak, Amaro found a new home with the Boston Red Sox but in a capacity no one saw coming as the team’s first base coach.

Amaro, 50, was a reserve outfielder for the Phillies throughout the ‘90s so perhaps he wanted out of the front office and back onto the field.

Klentak meanwhile worked in the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's front office as an  assistant general manager since 2011.
