Randy Moss, a veteran wide receiver who plays for the San Francisco 49ers, was interviewed about the chance to win his first super bowl. He really has had a great career, despite this season’s low statistics.
During the interview, Moss was asked about his thoughts on his career and his part in NFL history. According to the Associated Press, he said, "I don't really live on numbers. I really live on impact and what you're able to do out on the field. I really think I'm the greatest receiver to ever play this game."
Of course when Jerry Rice heard about the comment, he simply disagreed. You really have no choice but to recognize the numbers. Numbers don’t lie, and Rice holds the all-time record getting 1,549 receptions, 22,895 yards, and 198 touchdown receptions.
Rice had the chance to comment, and he took to ESPN to say, "I impacted the game by winning Super Bowls… Randy is still trying to win his first one, and I wish him the best, but I was very surprised that he said he's the best receiver to ever play the game. I leave that up to my fans to make that statement."
Yahoo! Sports reports that Moss’ basis of thinking he’s the greatest is that he changed the game. That’s true that he did help change the game, but not to the extent that Jerry Rice did and for not as long. Moss’ main threat is throwing the ball deep and him jumping up and catching it over everyone else. Rice just ran routes to perfection and made every defender study and watch him like he was the final exam they had the next day.
