Ronda Rousey’s mom, AnnMaria De Mars, has a lot to say about her daughter’s coach, Edmond Tarverdyan, and she refuses to hold back.
De Mars, who’s an accomplished fighter herself, opened up about her feeling on Tarverdyan to LatiNation.
“I think Edmond is a terrible coach, and I will say it publicly,” De Mars said. “I think he’s a terrible coach. I think he hit the lottery when Ronda walked in there.”
She explained that when Rousey started working with Tarverdyan, she was already a winner, so his guidance hasn’t helped her at all. In fact, she says she thinks her daughter stays with him out of superstition.
“She was winning before she ever met him,” De Mars said. “She probably won 99 percent of the judo matches she ever fought in. She’d won the Junior Worlds when she was 17. She got a bronze medal in the Olympics. She got a silver medal in the world championships. She was one of the top athletes in the world when she walked in there, and he wouldn’t even give her the time of day for months. Somebody like that is a terrible coach.”
De Mars, who’s a former Judo world champion, continued to say she told Rousey, who confirmed her relationship with UFC fighter Travis Browne this week, she wouldn’t keep quiet about her feelings on him any longer.
“I would caution anybody from going there,” she said of California’s Glendale Fighting Club. “And I think it’s bad he uses her to lure people in.”
