Rooney Mara and Nicholas Hoult will be falling in love on screen in the next Charlie McDowell film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mara and Hoult have been cast in The Discovery, a new science fiction romance film in which the existence of the afterlife is scientifically proven. Hoult will play the son of the man who made the titular discovery and Mara will play a woman with a tragic past who he falls in love with.
This will be the second sci-fi love story from Charlie McDowell, who previously did the excellent film The One I Love, in which a married couple goes away on a retreat only to end up in a situation straight out of The Twilight Zone. That movie only received a limited theatrical release and grossed about $500,000, but critics went crazy for it and it has gained much more recognition since being put on Netflix.
In addition to directing, Charlie McDowell will also write the screenplay for The Discovery alongside Justin Lader, who McDowell collaborated with on The One I Love.
The Discovery will be produced by Verisimilitude and Endgame Entertainment. No release date for the film has been set.
