San Francisco Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt announced on Thursday that he is retiring from baseball at the end of the season.
The retirement comes after playing in the majors for 14 seasons. Affeldt is completing a three-year, $18 million contract and was open to the idea of playing one more year, according to the Associated Press. He asked his three sons to help him with the decision. His wife Larisa was supportive of him continuing to play.
Affeldt was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1997. In 2006, he was traded to the Colorado Rockies and in 2008, he signed as a free agent with the Cincinnati Reds. He joined the Giants in 2009.
Affeldt is 17-18 with a 3.07 ERA in seven seasons with the Giants, according to MLB.com. This season, he has struggled with a 6.09 ERA in 50 appearances. Entering Thursday, Affeldt has a 43-46 career record with a 3.97 ERA. He won three World Series titles with the Giants.
Affeldt joins Giants right-handed pitcher Tim Hudson on the list of players retiring after this season. The Giants failed to make the playoffs this year.
