Pittsburgh Steelers’ running back DeAngelo Williams has been personally affected by cancer as he lost his mother to the disease and now he is doing some good to honor her memory.

October is breast cancer awareness month and the athlete recently announced that The DeAngelo Williams Foundation will pay for 53 women in need to have mammograms done in Pittsburgh and Charlotte, North Carolina.

The 32-year-old certainly knows the importance of women getting tested for breast cancer. In addition to losing his mother last year at the age of 53, he also lost four aunts to the disease.

The NFL shows its support for breast cancer awareness during the month of October, however, Williams wanted to take it a step further and show his support throughout the entire NFL season. As we previously reported, when he mentioned his plans to the league about wearing pink accessories all year long he was told he could not do that.

After receiving some backlash for telling Williams he couldn’t wear pink to honor his mother all season and fining fellow Steeler Cameron Heyward for his black eye tape worn to honor his late father the NFL released the following statement:

"There is a long-standing policy for all players regarding uniforms that is league-wide for all 32 teams. The league works with the clubs and players to raise awareness collectively for breast cancer during the month of October."
