Defiance became the latest Syfy show to be canceled, ending its three-season run.
The television show was brought about as an experimental force of content in telling a story for both television and online gaming. Bringing the show to viewers was done in partnership with Trion Worlds, according to Variety. The series narrative matched up with the video game, which also bore the same name, and events occurring in either medium affected the future narrative in the other.
The series took place in a near-dystopian future with seven alien races battling for Earth. It followed the tale of Nolan and his charge Irisa as they settle into the town of Defiance, where alien and human tensions are high.
Viewership in Defiance for season three was around 1.1 million viewers, a 28 percent decrease from the second season, as reported by Deadline.
“Defiance was a truly groundbreaking series, delivering an immersive, cross-platform experience that transcended the television screen in a way that viewers had never seen before,” Syfy released in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of the work of the extraordinary cast, writers, artists and designers – and especially showrunner Kevin Murphy – who together brought the rich world of Defiance to life over its three season arc."
Murphy also made a statement saying, “I got to collaborate with a group of stunning artists operating at the top of their game, and together we built a world. Because of that, there is no room for anything other than joy in my heart."
Defiance joined Dominion, Haven, Lost Girl and Continuum in the list of shows axed by Syfy this year, as the network continues to overhaul its programming.
