The loss of the Monkees’ Davy Jones has come as a shock as another great artist is taken from us. In his honor, here is a look back at some interesting yet, not well known facts about Jones’ life.

10. Davy Jones initially spent time being trained to become a jokey, but found himself more drawn towards theater. He starred in a London production of the play Oliver! in 1963, as the Artful Dodger.

9. The same night that The Beatles were featured on The Ed Sullivan Show, on February 9, 1964, Davy Jones was also featured. He was on the show with the Broadway cast of Oliver!

8. Jones was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in Oliver!

7. Davy began a career in acting when he starred on the British soap opera Coronation Street, at age 11.

6. Davy Jones had further acting experience when the Monkees starred in their own film in 1968 called Head. The movie however did not do well at the box offices.

5. Throughout his life, Jones wrote a few autobiographies. In 1987, he wrote the autobiography, “They Made a Monkee Out of Me,” which became rather popular.

4. After his years with the Monkees, Jones appeared in The Brady Bunch Movie and on popular 90s television shows including, Boy Meets World, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, My Two Dads, and The Single Guy.

3. He appeared on and sang in the animated form of The New Scooby-Doo, and his voice also appeared on Hey Arnold.

2. Jones was named the number one teen idol of all time in 2008 by Yahoo Music, and was rated the second best of the top ten teen idols by Fox News.

1. In 2006, he recorded the song “Your Personal Penguin,” which was written by children’s author Sandra Boynton. The song went along with her children’s book with the same title.
