N.W.A. was one of the earliest and most seminal hip-hop groups of all time. Founded in Compton, California by a group of friends, N.W.A. would go on to become one of the most influential groups in the history of hip-hop music, popularizing gangsta rap and West Coast hip-hop subgenres.
Originally active from 1986-1991, N.W.A., featuring the likes of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, and MC Ren, drew much controversy for their arguably misogynistic lyrics that also glorified a life of drugs and crime.
Yet, despite being banned from many mainstream radio stations, N.W.A. has sold over 10 million units in the United States alone, forging a lasting legacy and paving the way for future hip-hop artists.
Being back in the spotlight this year thanks to the biopic Straight Outta Compton and their recent nomination to the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it’s worth revisiting N.W.A.’s discography, and break down their top 10 songs.
