Books come to life and true stories make their way to the big screen this week. Adults and children with an affinity for fright also have something to see.

A teenage boy accidentally unleashes the monsters of a book series in Goosebumps. New in town, the teen befriends the girl next door and discovers that her father is R.L. Stine, the author of the popular horror collection. During a visit to their house with his friend, their curiosity gets the best of them and incites chaos. The PG film stars Jack Black, Dylan Minnette and Odeya Rush. The comedic adventure plays for one hour and 43 minutes.

A woman falls for a mysterious man who whisks her away to his mansion in Crimson Peak. She discovers that there’s more to his home than it appears, something evil lives behind the walls. Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam star in the Guillermo del Toro directed horror film. The one hour and 59-minute film is available in conventional and IMAX theaters. It’s rated R for violence, sex and language.

An insurance lawyer is asked to help mediate the release of an American prisoner held captive by the Soviet Union in Bridge of Spies. Set during the Cold War, the unlikely attorney is pressured to go into dangerous territory to get the warring country to swap captured informants. Steve Spielberg directed the PG-13 film which stars Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Scott Shepherd, Amy Ryan, Sebastian Koch and Alan Alda. The one hour and 43-minute dramatic thriller is based on real events.

The story behind the 2004 60 Minutes report that challenged whether or not President George W. Bush fulfilled his service in the military is portrayed in Truth. The CBS newscast put Dan Rather, his producer Mary Mapes and the news team in hot water. Their belief that they uncovered secrets that the government wanted to keep hidden eventually destroyed their careers. The two hour and one minute biographic drama is based on Mapes’ book Truth and Duty and stars Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Topher Grace, Elisabeth Moss and Dennis Quaid.  The limited release film is rated R for language and nudity.

The idea behind the Milgram experiment is shown in Experimenter. Scientist Stanley Milgram challenges whether people will obey orders when the commands go against what they believe in. The PG-13 biographic drama stars Peter Sarsgaard, Winona Ryder, Jim Gaffigan, Kellan Lutz, Taryn Manning and Anton Yelchin. The one hour and thirty minute film is available in limited theaters.

A mother and her son are kidnapped and kept in a small shed in Room. The woman devises a plan for their release. Once free, the young boy experiences what the world is really like outside the only place he’s ever known, those four walls. The drama runs for one hour and 58 minutes. It’s rated R for language. It’s currently available in limited theaters but expands to wide release on Nov. 6.

A faith in God brings a racially segregated community together in Woodlawn. When a talented African-American football player joins the Birmingham, Alabama high school team, tensions mount, but their belief in Jesus tears their walls down and unites them. The PG drama is based on real events. The 123-minute film stars Sean Astin, Nic Bishop, Caleb Castille, Sherri Shepherd and Jon Voight.

A skilled thief is involved in a botched heist in Momentum. When secrets are revealed, she becomes the target of an assassin. The unrated thriller is running in limited theaters for one hour and 36 minutes.

Misty Copeland, the first African American prima ballerina is the subject of the documentary A Ballerina's Tale. After her first performance as the principal dancer in Igor Stravinsky's Firebird, Misty finds out that she has six fractures in her shin, requiring surgery. This devastating news caused her to face the possible challenge of never being able to dance again. The unrated film is playing in limited theaters for one hour and 28 minutes.

As Halloween comes near, more horror films make their way into theaters. Next week, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is primed for the box office race.  Jem and the Holograms, Rock the Kasbah and Burnt will also make their debut on Oct. 23.
