The new Mummy monster in the upcoming film might be female, according to sources for The Hollywood Reporter. The site reports that the Mummy will terrorize people in today’s world. The gender of the Mummy still depends on casting, as Universal still sounds open to casting a male as the main Mummy baddie.

The Mummy is one of the original Universal Monsters, with the first film coming out in 1932 and starring Boris Karloff in the title role (although he didn’t actually spend a lot of time all wrapped up like a Mummy). Universal remade the movie in 1999 with Arnold Vosloo as the Mummy.

This new movie is currently scheduled for March 24, 2017 and will kick off the studio’s connected monster movie universe. Alex Kurtzman is directing with a script from Jon Spaihts.

Other possible films in the series could focus on Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein and The Creature From The Black Lagoon. The good news for Universal: most of the stories that these characters come from are in the public domain.
