Six Americans were among those rescued as the hostage situation at a luxury hotel in Bamako, Mali, ended on Friday.
ABC News noted that a U.S. defense official confirmed the number of U.S. citizens among the some 170 that were taken hostage and later recused at the Radisson Blu hotel.
As we previously reported, sometime before 7:00 a.m. Friday morning, 10 gunman stormed the hotel screaming “Allahu Akbar,” before shooting and taking guest and employees as hostages.
Officials at the time said that two Malian nationals and one French nationals were fatally shot. A United Nations spokesman later reiterated that at least two people were killed.
A defense official also stated that 22 Defense Department personnel were in the city at the time of the incident, however, they have all been accounted for.
In a statement the hotel said, "Our highest concern is the safety of all our guests and employees in the hotel. We are in constant contact with the authorities there and will share further information with you when we have it."
