Are you a fan of destructive robots fighting to the death? Well, you’re in luck, because BattleBots was renewed for a second season on Thursday.
The ABC reboot of the Comedy Central series, which was brought back last summer, has been picked up for a second season. The series will keep its single-elimination tournament format, but with an expanded field and more in-depth coverage of the robots and teams.
Specifically, the tournament will double in size, bringing the amount of teams to 32, and the show will feature more coverage on expert roboticists and garage builders, as well as a greater focus on the narrative of each competing team. Past winners will also be returning to defend their turf, the network said.
BattleBots had been a cult show in the early 2000s and originally featured hosts Bil Dwyer and Sean Salisbury and Bill Nye The Science Guy as a technical expert. The original show ran for five seasons before being canceled in 2002. Since being revived by ABC, the show has found a dedicated and growing audience, averaging over 5 million viewers per episode during its Sunday summer run.
A premiere date for the second season of BattleBots has not yet been announced, but it is possible the show could be back in summer 2016.
MGM Television will distribute the program internationally, with Lloyd Braun, Chris Cowan, Ed Roski, Greg Munson and Aaron Catling executive producing.
