Donald Trump, who is still leading the race for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, discussed his plans for Muslims in America. He said his plans will involve drastic measures that some thought we’d never see used in the U.S.
During an interview with Yahoo News, the billionaire was asked if he would want more surveillance of American Muslims and would even use warrantless searches.
“We’re going to have to do things that we never did before. And some people are going to be upset about it, but I think that now everybody is feeling that security is going to rule,” Trump replied. He added that, “Certain things will be done that we never thought would happen in this country in terms of information and learning about the enemy.”
Trump also wouldn’t rule out a database that Muslims would have to register for and a special ID with their religion noted.
“We’re going to have to — we’re going to have to look at a lot of things very closely,” Trump said. “We’re going to have to look at the mosques. We’re going to have to look very, very carefully.”
The Hill notes that this isn’t the first time Trump has suggested surveilling mosques following the Paris attacks by ISIS last week.
“You’re going to have to watch and study the mosques, because a lot of talk is going on in the mosques,” Trump said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Monday. “And from what I heard, in the old days — meaning a while ago — we had a great surveillance going on in and around the mosques of New York City.”
