Fox has picked John Cena, the latest wrestler to turn to acting, to host American Grit, a new reality competition series with a military theme. The network announced the show on Wednesday and it will run 10 episodes.
American Grit will feature men and women going through military-grade challenges that will also test their survival skills. Cena will be joined by a group of mentors called “The Cadre,” which includes Rorke Denver, Noah Galloway, Tawanda ‘Tee’ Hanible and Nick ‘The Reaper’ Irving. All four have different backgrounds in the U.S. military and will help the contestants learn to work together and get through the challenges.
The series is a Leftfield Pictures production and contestants can win up to $1 million.
“The U.S Military is the epitome of resolve and dedication, which is why I am so excited to be a part of American Grit,” Cena said in a statement. “This show will not only be a challenging and fierce competition, but it will give viewers a glimpse into the perseverance and training of the men and women of the Armed Forces.”
Fox hasn’t announced a premiere date, but this sounds like a fit for the summer. The network will be a little slim on reality programming at the end of the season, since American Idol is coming to an end. That show’s final season starts in January.
As for Cena, he made an appearance appearance in Trainwreck with Amy Schumer. The WWE star also has a role in the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy Sisters.
