George Barris, the designer of television’s most iconic vehicles, has died. He was 89.
The news was confirmed via Facebook Thursday by his son Brett Barris.
"Sorry to have to post that my father, legendary kustom car king George Barris, has moved to the bigger garage in the sky. He passed on peacefully in his sleep at 2:45 am," the post read. "He lived his life the way he wanted til the end. He would want everyone [to] celebrate the passion he had for life and for what he created for all to enjoy."
Barris created several legendary cars for the small screen including the Munster Koach, the Green Hornet's vehicle and the convertible version of Knight Rider’s KITT. But he was perhaps best known for creating the famous Batmobile.
CNN noted that he designed the mobile for the 1960s TV show. The vehicle ran on atomic batteries. It featured a "bat beam" and was slowed down parachutes, which Barris got pulled over for when he used them on a highway once.
Barris was a veteran in California body shops and was able to convey a love for what he did through what he was able to create. The vehicles he designed for TV fans will live in their memories for years to come.
