PBS released a series called In Their Own Words and featured in depth looks into many figures in history, including Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II. Debuting on DVD Nov. 3, the documentary on Queen Elizabeth II is a fascinating look into the life of the woman who grew up as a Princess before being thrust into the role of Queen, as she has remained since 1952.
The documentary looks back at the Queen’s life, from when she was born to Prince Albert, the Duke of York, and his wife, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Everyone who knows the history of the royal family knows that when she was born, the young Princess Elizabeth was not expected to become Queen until her Uncle Edward abdicated the throne, thus putting the Duke of York in line as King.
In true documentary style, there are interviews with people who know the Queen, including cousins Margaret Rhodes and Lady Elizabeth Anson, and the former president George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara and actor Sir Ben Kingsley. There are also personal family photos and home movies that give a glimpse into the relationship the Queen has had with her loved ones, including a touching glimpse of the young Princess moving her father’s hair out of his face.
For anyone who is interested in the history of the royal family, then this is a good DVD to own. It does not have any special features, but there is enough in this 60-minute feature for one to be satisfied with the topic.
Brought to you by Public Media Distribution and PBS, the DVD is available for purchase.
