Jane The Virgin opened with a young Jane having a hard time with a babysitting job. In the present, it is Black Friday shopping day and the women are getting ready while Rafael and Jane discuss getting a babysitter for Mateo for their date night. Jane is reluctant to get anyone outside of the family to watch him, even though Xo is busy with Christmas dance recitals and Rogelio is busy with his show. Rafael asks her to give it a shot and he will even do a full background check.
Jane relents and then they go to the store to shop. After telling Rafael the rules of shopping, Jane heads off and then notices Michael is shopping as well. She goes to say hi to him, but he doesn’t want to talk and tell her he has moved on. When Rafael comes over, Michael walks away and leaves.
At home, Jane talks about how things were weird with Michael before showing her mom the dress for the party. She wants to impress Dr. Lorraine Bolton in hopes she will be her advisor. She takes Mateo to the hotel to see Rafael and finds Petra getting three things of ice. Jane offers to help her with it, but Petra refuses and we see she is helping to ice Ivan’s body.
Petra tries to get her mother to go to the police so she won’t be an accomplice, but Magda threatens to bring her down too.
Rogelio comes to see Xiomara to tell her he is going to Los Angeles to speak to a bigwig about fixing a legal issue with Mad Men. Xiomara is annoyed that he hasn’t talked to her about the song she did for the theme of his show. He tells her he is sorry since he has been focused on himself, but that he loved what she did and sent it to the network, even though his show is having problems.
Jane is at the party and psyching herself up to talking to Dr. Bolton. She has a list of things to talk about and talks to Wesley about them. While waiting for Dr. Chavez to leave, she ends up drinking quite a bit and talks to Wesley about Luisa. When she sees an opening, Jane goes up to the group, but then everyone else talks about the things she planned on saying. When Jane begins talking, she accidentally hits a tray of deviled eggs and they land on Dr. Bolton.
At home, Xiomara stops Jane from apologizing to Dr. Bolton via email and tells her to do it the old fashioned way. Meanwhile, Rogelio tries to sell his pilot in Hollywood, but his request is denied.
Michael stands outside at the funeral for Nadine, who was shot protecting him while they were out of the country. When the funeral ends, Eric Wu, the guy who turned him in, tells Michael he needs to leave.
Jane goes to drop off her apology note, but it ends up getting wet from her water bottle. She tries to find a pen from the desk, but Dr. Bolton comes in and it looks like she is snooping around. Jane tries to apologize again when the refrigerator cord in the room goes out. Dr. Bolton is worried about pumping and she has the same bag Jane used and they end up bonding over this. Jane joyfully later tells her mom and Rafael that she had agreed to look over her paper.
Rafael, Xo, and Jane interview nannies, but the first few do not pan with how they want to raise Mateo. They do find a candidate in Chepa, who has experience as a pediatric nurse and is bilingual. After she leaves, Jane agrees that as long as her references check out, they may have her as a babysitter. Occasionally.
Rogelio is at the house when Jane and Xo come home. He is upset since the meeting with the bigwig did not go well and his show will not be happening. They also discover the private investor he had put everything into the show and that it was him, despite the fact that his financial advisor had tried to stop him. The girls are shocked to realize that Rogelio is also broke since he leases everything he has.
Xo and Jane try to help Rogelio with a new budget, but he is stubborn and doesn’t want to go anything less than big. They are interrupted when Petra calls Jane and apologizes for her weird behavior the day before. She also asks Jane out for lunch.
Jane texts Wesley about going to see Dr. Bolton and he claims to be at a yoga class, but he is actually at an AA meeting where Luisa is. Meanwhile, Jane talks to Dr. Bolton about how she was impregnated. As Dr. Bolton gives Jane vague tips on strengthening her story, Wesley talks to Luisa about Sin Rostro, her biological mom’s supposed suicide and more as he secretly records her.
The network executives who fired Rogelio say he can come back, but want him to come back as a cowboy, even though the hat they show him reminds him of the hat he used to wear on another show. Later, he studies the script with Jane. While his heart doesn’t seem to be into it, Jane suggests that maybe he should go with the budget. Rogelio tells her he has worked too hard to go back to a one bedroom apartment.
Xo comes in and tells them the network wants to use her song on Esteban’s show. Rogelio tells her he is happy for her. Later, Jane tries to write using Bolton’s notes, but she is having a hard time finding inspiration. When Mateo begins crying, Jane laments she feels the same way.
Jane is at the hotel waiting for Petra with Mateo. But when Petra arrives, her mother distracts her since she is not upstairs with Ivan. Because of her mom, Petra has to cancel on Jane, leaving the latter annoyed.
Michael is in the police station with Anderson and Susannah. He has a security camera set up of a room, which is a location he got from Nadine’s cell phone. It turns out that Michael was never fired and was simply working undercover since he had a direct link with Nadine. The bar they are focusing on was purchased in 1983 by the Maracay Group, which is a business that is in the control of Emilio Solano. Michael tells them that Rose could be using it for a front in money laundering.
Jane and Rafael try to leave for their date, but she has a hard time leaving Mateo. Meanwhile, Rogelio goes to see Esteban about using Xiomara’s song in order to cause trouble. However, it turns out Esteban had no idea the song was hers.
Chepa tries to take care of Mateo, but Jane hovers so much that she decides to leave. Xiomara is hurt to find out what Rogelio did and tells him he was being completely selfish when it should have been something for her.
Jane comes home, having not been able to go on the date, and tells her parents she is putting Mateo to bed then doing some writing. But she is having a hard time, until she decides to go back to Dr. Chavez’s notes.
At the police station, Susannah and Michael see on the security footage that the men are handling bundles of money wrapped in a blue cord. It is the same one that was used in Luisa’s kidnapping, meaning Mutter is behind it. They feel Rose was trying to send a message back to Mutter when the kidnapping occurred and was going to use the bar.
Jane goes to see Dr. Chavez about asking him to be her advisor. However, when he repeats the same text she thought she sent to Wesley about him being condescending, she realizes she messed up big time.
Petra sees her mother is trying to sneak Ivan out in a wheelchair and ends up having to help her. But when Jane comes along, Petra has to stop her and ends up saying they shouldn’t be friends.
Jane later tells her mom she is done with Petra as they go to see Rogelio for the shoot of his show. Rogelio is happy to see Xo, who may be mad but still will be there for him. When Rogelio is so happy he literally rides off with the horse, Jane uses this as courage to talk to Dr. Chavez again. Not wanting to deal with her in a class environment, he agrees to be her advisor.
Jane and Rafael leave for their date night and he shows her a house he wants to buy so he can be close to Mateo. As they are about to kiss, Lina sends Jane a text alerting her to the expose Wesley has written on the Solanos.
They go back to the suite, where Rafael is planning on suing Wesley for defamation. Jane apologizes for what happened and he says it is not her fault since she was unaware. He gets another call and Jane sees Chepa, who tells her Mateo waved. Jane is delighted and asks her to come again next week to her house.
Rogelio shows Xo his new condo and tells her he will wait for the right script. She gets a call from the network and finds out they are using her song. She wonders if he was involved. It turns out Rogelio put himself through humiliation in front of Esteban in order to make sure her song was the one they used. Rogelio denies it, even though he can’t keep a straight face.
As this is all happening, Petra stands mournfully as her mother buries Ivan.
Jane is holding Mateo and talking about his wave. She goes to the nanny cam to see if she can find it, but then sees an image of Rafael talking to Eric Wu. It turns out he did sell Michael out. Jane is furious, but Rafael tries to turn it back around to Michael being responsible for the kidnapping. An angry Jane leaves.
Susannah asks Michael if he read the Solano article, but he hadn’t yet. She tells him about the part where Luisa’s mother supposedly committing suicide in 1983 and how she could be alive since the casket had been closed.
Meanwhile, at the cemetery, Luisa talks to someone about seeing the casket open. As this happens, Susannah suggests it could be possible that Luisa’s mom faked her own death to set up the money laundering operation. Luisa sees the casket is empty, meaning her mom is alive and she could find her.
