During an interview with Graham Norton, Johnny Depp revealed what the worst period of his life was and it involves his daughter with ex Vanessa Paradis.
Depp and Paradis share two children; daughter Lily-Rose, 16, and Jack, 13. When Lily-Rose was 7 in 2007, the “darkest period” of Depp’s life was when she had a health scare.
On The Graham Norton Show, Depp said after his daughter went into kidney failure after getting an E. Coli infection, the experience of visiting sick children in the hospital in his Jack Sparrow costume meant much more to him.
"For me it's a gift. They give me the gift," he said. "When my daughter was ill in Great Ormond Street it was the darkest period of my life. I'd always done these visits but after that experience the visits became more and more important."
He went on to say that the visits not only benefit the children, but also their parents. Being in their shoes at one point made him understand that on a deeper level.
“The kids are so courageous but to be able to bring a smile or a giggle to the parents means everything in the world to me," he said.
The year after Lily-Rose was discharged and better again, Depp donated $2 million to the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
