An live-action adaptation of the anime Death Note is on the way and the film has just cast its female lead.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Margaret Qualley is in final negotiations to join Death Note. The young actress is known for her performance as Jill Garvey on HBO's The Leftovers. This was her first major role, although she had a small part in the Emma Roberts movie Palo Alto.
Death Note, based on the anime and manga series of the same name, follows a student, Kira, who finds a notebook which will kill anyone whose name is written in it. When criminals begin to die around the city, he's soon pursued by investigators.
We don't yet have word on who Qualley will play, although one possibility is Misa Amane, a model who becomes a huge supporter of Kira. There are a few other female characters in Death Note like Naomi Misora, but Qualley is likely a bit too young for those roles.
Death Note will be directed by Adam Wingard, known for movies like You're Next and The Guest. The most recent draft of the script was written by Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect, Fantastic Four).
