MTV's Scream premiered this summer to mostly negative reviews and the network seems to be taking the show in a new direction next year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scream showrunners Jill Blotevogel and Jaime Paglia are stepping down and being replaced by Michael Gans and Richard Register. These new showrunners have previously collaberated on ABC Family's Make It Or Break It, but they had no involvement in Scream's first season.

Evidently Dimension TV, the studio behind Scream, was unhappy with the show's creative direction and so this behind-the-scenes decision was made to improve the series' quality. This disappointment was not uncommon, as critics generally found Scream to pale in comparison to the movies it was based on.

This doesn't mean Season 2 will be a reboot in terms of the story, though, as the cast is expected to remain on board next year.

Scream averaged 755,000 viewers across a ten episode first season, enough to justify another season but not enough to qualify as a smash hit.

Former showrunner Jill Blotevogel will remain as a consultant for Season 2, while Jaime Paglia will have no further involvement in the series.
