The New York Jets waived outside linebacker Quinton Coples on Monday.
The Jets drafted Coples in 2012 as the 16th overall pick. Coples had signed a four-year fully-guaranteed $8.8 million contract with the team. He had a fifth-year option for $7.8 million which the Jets exercised during the offseason, according to the Associated Press. However they guaranteed it for injury only so they don’t owe Coples any money.
''He just wasn't playing,'' Jets coach Todd Bowles said of Coples release. ''We didn't have a spot. We weren't playing him and he wasn't getting any time. It was just a business move. It was nothing personal.''
Coples started the season as a starting outside linebacker. His playing time has decreased in recent weeks as he has struggled since the Jets began using the 4-3 front. He has 12 tackles and no sacks in ten games this season, according to ESPN. Coples has 16.5 sacks in four seasons with the Jets.
The Jets have a plan to fill Coples spot on the roster but haven’t revealed what those plans are.
