In 1002 A.D., Klaus and Aurora are in love. They meet in secret. She sees Klaus and his family feeding and runs away screaming. He sends her a love note.
In modern day, Aurora tells the story to a shop keeper. She asks the keeper to deliver a letter with her special instructions.
Klaus and Elijah arrive home to find the shop keeper dead on their floor with a note telling Klaus to find Aurora. Klaus is eager to find her. Elijah says he remembered something about Aurora when their mother opened his memories. Klaus says it can wait.
The city is holding a jazz fest with a serial killer theme based on the Axeman from 1919, who wrote a letter to the town saying he’d kill thousands the next night unless every single house threw a party and played jazz. Vince tells Cami he’s sure the Axeman was a witch because he chose a witches’ holiday, Feast of Gifts, where they give a gift to the city in the hopes of getting a gift back. Cami says the witches will be easy pickings for the new serial killer while celebrating the holiday. Cami wants to keep tabs on Lucian. Cami and Vince see Lucian at the festival. They follow him.
Elijah and Klaus wander the festival looking for a mark left by Aurora. Klaus notices a perfume bottle out of place. He has a flashback to Aurora asking Klaus to change her, like he did Lucian, so they won’t have to hide their love any longer. He tells her she’s perfect as she is. Coming out of his memory, Klaus picks up the perfume bottle and finds a shop name underneath. He leaves Elijah behind and opens the door to the shop to find Aurora.
Davina summons Jackson and Hayley to her side while she readies for the witches’ ceremony. She wants protection against some witches who want revenge for the members Davina had Hayley kill in the ninth ward. Davina says if she dies, the candle dies too and then the Crescent Moon pack will be wolves again. Jackson tells Hayley to stay with Davina while he checks out the crowd.
Aurora greets Klaus and says it feels like yesterday that they were together. She asks if Elijah was reluctant to come along, but Klaus says Elijah has been calling him non-stop since he ditched him, wanting to tell him the ancient secret. Klaus guesses that Aurora slept with Elijah, but she denies it. He asks her why she’s there. She says the Feast of Gifts reminds her of a gift they gave each other long ago.
In another flashback, Aurora is crying on her birthday. She’s upset because she killed her mother in childbirth. She says it makes her cursed. Klaus tells her the secret of how he killed his mother purposely and blamed it on his father. His family has been running ever since. He tells Aurora that she cannot be as broken as him. She says they are the same and they will forever hold each other’s deepest shame without speaking them to anyone else. She asks Klaus to change her as a birthday gift.
Back in the shop, Aurora says she’s in town to protect her sire. When Klaus refused to change her, she went to Rebekah.
Elijah goes to Tristan and questions him about Aurora. Tristan says she can’t be in town because he’d be the first person she came to. Elijah says he wouldn’t be so sure and shows Tristan the note from Aurora.
Cami and Vince are still following Lucian when he disappears. When Vince looks away to see where Lucian went, Cami disappears too. Lucian took her. He asks why she’s hounding him when he was cleared by the detectives. She says she’s good at reading people. Lucian threatens her and Cami says Klaus won’t be happy if he hurts her. Lucian says she’s about to find out what he’s capable of and runs off. Cami hears someone struggling and finds another serial killer victim.
Klaus tells Aurora she’s wasted her time looking for Rebekah. Aurora says she should be allowed to protect her, but Klaus says Rebekah would never trust her again. Flashback to Aurora on her bed with slashed wrists. Rebekah finds her and heals her with her blood. Aurora asks Rebekah to change her, but she won’t. Rebekah says they’re cursed. Aurora tells her their curse is nothing compared to hers. She asks Rebekah to go so she can sleep. Once Rebekah leaves, Aurora leaps out the window, turning herself.
Davina receives gifts of livestock from her coven. She apologizes and says she needs a minute. Hayley follows her. Davina says she knows it’s tradition, but it’s not her. Davina says she wore a choker scarf to be more like Josephine, hoping to get respect. Hayley says she wasn’t okay with what she did to the coven, but she knows Davina isn’t okay with it either. She says Davina is trying to be someone the coven wants her to be, instead of herself. Hayley says no one will respect her until she shows them who she really is.
Elijah approaches Marcel about finding out what Tristan is hiding. Tristan’s heart pounded when Elijah accused him of working with someone, but it isn’t Aurora. Marcel says he isn’t going to blow his cover with the Strix just because Elijah has a hunch. However, he’ll have his people trail Tristan to see what they can find out.
