New Orleans Pelicans center Kendrick Perkins will be sidelined for some time after suffering a right pectoral injury.
Perkins, who suffered the injury in the first quarter during a 134-120 loss to the Golden State Warriors, will be out for at least two to three months while he rehabilitates, per ESPN.
The Pelicans had signed the veteran Perkins this offseason with the intention of him playing a role off the bench and providing locker room leadership. However, injuries to starting center Omer Asik had forced Perkins into a starting role.
In three games as a starter, Perkins averaged 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
The Pelicans had entered this season with playoff aspirations, but have gone winless two weeks into the fledgling season, as their roster has been decimated by injuries across the board.
Asik has been sidelined with a right calf strain, while guards Tyreke Evans (right knee) and Norris Cole (left ankle sprain) are also out without a timetable for return, according to NOLA.com.
With Perkins and Asik out, the Pelicans will have to call on seldom-used reserve Alexis Ajinca to fill in at center, and it looks like burgeoning superstar Anthony Davis will have to shoulder a greater load. Through the first six games, the 22-year-old Davis is averaging 25.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game.
