A special live edition of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will air right after Super Bowl 50 on CBS, the network said today.
Rather than tape an episode earlier on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, Colbert will be broadcast live from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City immediately after the game. Following the special episode, there will be a local news broadcast and, after that, a taped episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden.
“It’s been a very big year in late night at CBS,” CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller said in a statement. “We’re extremely proud of our two new late night franchises, and we’re thrilled to give Stephen and James this big Super Bowl Sunday showcase.”
This is a surprising decision for CBS since the networks usually air a new episode of a particular show they want to highlight after Super Bowl broadcasts. For example, NBC aired an episode of The Blacklist after last year’s Super Bowl. Fox aired episodes of New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine after the game the year before. So, this will be the first time that a network has chosen a late night talk show to highlight after the game.
Super Bowl 50 will be played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California and kicks off on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.
