Authorities have said that four people were injured in a knife attack at a college campus in central California on Wednesday.

The Associated Press reported that the incident took place around 8 a.m. at University of California, Merced, when a knife-wielding suspect went on a rampage and stabbed five people. About twenty minutes later law enforcement arrived on the scene and fatally shot the suspect.

Assistant Vice Chancellor Patti Waid said of those injured two victims were airlifted to the hospital and were conscious by the time medical personal reached them. The other victims only suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

CNN noted that the school first reported that five students were injured by the assailant, but later put that number at four.

The victims were attacked in front of the Classroom and Office Building. After the violence unfolded the school was placed on lockdown before officials decided to cancel classes for the rest of the day.

A motive for the stabbing is not known at this time.
