Val Kilmer broke the news that he might return to the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun and while he’s not officially tied to the project yet, it got us thinking: It’s been a while since we’ve seen the actor on the big screen.
Kilmer posted to Facebook earlier this week that his agent contacted him about an offer to reprise his role as Iceman in Top Gun 2. Kilmer’s wording sort of implied he was already participating – and that the project had Francis Ford Coppola and Gene Hackman involved.
Later, he clarified his statement, revealing his agent approached him about the project. Kilmer has yet to give a definite yes-or-no answer. The movie, meanwhile, doesn’t have a director; Tony Scott, who directed the original, passed away in 2012.
While Top Gun made Kilmer a star in the late 1980s, he’s dropped far out of A-list status over the years, and now appears to get steady work in B-movies. His last starring effort, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, had a limited release 10 years ago. Since then, his only notable work has been in supporting roles in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, MacGruber, and Planes.
Signing on for the Top Gun sequel could be a major boost for the actor. So, before then, we list his 10 most notable works to date.
