On the November 5 episode of The Vampire Diaries, Stefan learns some disturbing details about his past relationship with Valerie, while Bonnie learns the Phoenix stone is not what it appears to be and has to confront Alaric.
Three years from now, Bonnie is in group therapy. She says one mistake led to her losing someone she loved. She’s trying to move on. When she gets back to her apartment, Enzo is there. They kiss.
In modern day, Rick is sitting with Jo, who is sleeping. Bonnie comes in and says she feels she has to do more research into how the Phoenix stone works. She wants to learn what kind of magic she did, just in case it has consequences. Rick gives her the stone and Bonnie leaves just before Jo wakes up. Jo says she’s starving.
Caroline and Stefan are curled up in bed. They kiss and Damon comes in with coffee. Damon says he’s turning over a new leaf, doing right by Elena. Damon says he needs Stefan to help him interrogate Valerie. Caroline tells Damon about Stefan and Valerie’s past and then pushes Stefan to go talk to her.
Enzo gives Oscar a bag of blood and Lily thanks him for sitting with Oscar all night. She says Julien will arrive today if all goes as planned. She asks Enzo to be happy for her. Nora and Mary Louise come in and try talking to Oscar. Oscar doesn’t respond and Lily asks Enzo to keep an eye on him that day. She also says if he hears from Valerie, to ask her to come home.
Enzo calls Valerie who is on her way to find Julien based on directions on Oscar’s phone. Enzo warns her that Lily is on her way there too. He says Lily used a locator spell.
Valerie squeals to a halt because Damon and his car are blocking the road. He was able to track her because she stole Matt’s SUV. Damon wants to know why she killed Oscar and framed him for the murder. She plays dumb until he threatens to call Lily. She chokes him with magic until Stefan stops her and asks what’s going on.
Caroline tells Bonnie that she sent Stefan to talk with Valerie. She says she wants him to be able to clear away the drama and start clean. Bonnie says she’s going to Mystic Falls to talk to Oscar.
In the car, Damon questions Valerie about why she hates Julien. She’s vague with her answers. Damon asks why Valerie never showed when she was supposed to meet Stefan. Stefan tells him to shut up. Stefan says she was just spying for Lily and that it was a game. She doesn’t answer him, but asks for their help destroying Julien.
Jo has no memory of who she is or who Rick is. Rick says it will take time. He tries to open a bottle of wine and cuts himself. Jo says she’ll wrap it for him.
Stefan calls Caroline from a gas station. He asks her to dinner that night and tells her that Valerie didn’t deny that their time together was a lie. Valerie asks Damon to fill a gas can from the pump to use as an accelerant on Julien’s body. Damon says they haven’t even killed the guy yet and she tells him Julien’s already dead.
Bonnie enters the Salvatore house looking for Oscar. Enzo tries to escort her out, but they hear screaming and both run to find Oscar feeding on the maid. Enzo pulls him off, feeds the maid his blood and compels her to forget. Bonnie asks Oscar if he remembers her from Myrtle Beach. He says he’s never been there, but he remembers her from the morgue. He says she’s the one who got him out of the stone.
Damon, Stefan and Valerie break into the casket emporium where Oscar hid Julien’s body. They start opening the coffins one by one to find him. Valerie asks Damon about the Phoenix stone, which she says Lily needs to bring Julien back to life. She says whoever they brought back into Oscar’s body fooled Lily. She says that the stone is full of old vampire souls. It doesn’t bring the dead back to life unless they’re stored in it. Instead it puts a new soul in the body.
Damon calls Bonnie and tells her she needs to tell Rick that the soul in Jo’s body isn’t really her. Bonnie also realizes Oscar isn’t Oscar. She tells Enzo she needs to leave. Enzo wants the stone for Lily. Oscar attacks Bonnie saying he’s not going back in the stone. She hurts him with magic and then Enzo attacks him. He screams that his name’s not Oscar and the lights blow out. He realizes that he can do magic. Bonnie tells Enzo to run. He grabs the Phoenix stone before leaving the room.
Jo finds a gun and her wedding dress with blood on it. She asks Rick what happened to her. He tells her that her brother stabbed her. She remembers being stabbed in the heart. Rick tells her that’s not what happened, but she’s upset. She points the gun at him and then runs.
Stefan finds a locked coffin and Valerie syphons the magic sealing it. Julien is inside. His body’s been preserved with magic. Valerie spits on him and then pours gasoline on his body. When she tries to light it, the fire immediately goes out. Nora and Mary Louise uncloak themselves and call to Lily, telling her that Valerie was trying to kill Julien.
Lily tells Valerie that they found Julien through a locator spell done with a ring she left behind in Oscar’s pocket. Valerie tells Lily Julien is a monster, but Lily won’t hear it. Valerie says Lily was blinded by love and Lily slaps her. Lily says Julien is the love of her life who makes her a better person. She asks if Damon knows how that feels. As Lily is wheeling Julien out of the building, Valerie says Julien made her cruel. She tells the guys that Lily convinced Kai to put Elena in the coma. She wanted to make Damon pay for refusing to help rescue her family from the prison world. Damon tries to choke Lily, but Beau throws him off and blows up the caskets around them.
Bonnie and Enzo flee to another part of the house where Bonnie spells the door shut. She asks him for the stone back and he asks her why it’s special. She tells him it’s a trap for souls. Enzo realizes that Julien’s soul must be inside if Lily wants it. Bonnie asks him if he really wants to give Lily the means to bring her dead boyfriend back into the picture. She tells Enzo he deserves better. Oscar breaks in looking for the stone. Bonnie tells him that Enzo has it and then runs out the door. Enzo throws the stone and when Oscar bends over to get it, Enzo stakes him, taking it back.
Damon wants to kill Lily, but Stefan stops him by reminding him he’s turning over a new leaf. He promises Damon that they won’t let her get away with it.
Stefan finds Valerie and removes the wooden splinters from her body. She says it’s pointless – that Lily or Julien will kill her. She says if she knew how deeply he’d hate her, she would’ve acted differently. He says he doesn’t hate her, he just wanted the truth. She tells him she did try to come back for him, but Julien stopped her. She tells Stefan she was pregnant and that Julien killed the baby. She apologizes for keeping it a secret.
Enzo shows Lily the stone. When she tries to take it, Enzo asks why Valerie would risk everything to keep Julien from coming back. He asks why he should stand by while she brings back a man who has complete control over her. He asks her to choose between him and Julien. She takes the stone. He leaves.
Bonnie is drinking and calls Rick. She tells him Jo isn’t his wife. He says Jo just needs time to adjust. Bonnie says her soul was never in the stone. She asks him where he is, but he hangs up. He finds Jo and tells her he just wants to talk. She gives him the gun. She says nothing is familiar. He tells her she’s not his wife. She asks who she is. He says he doesn’t know, but he’ll help her figure it out.
Caroline calls Stefan to ask what time she should push the date back to. He tells her he’s still in Mystic Falls. He says things got complicated. He says he’ll make it up to her. She asks if there’s anything else monumental she should know about and he says no.
Valerie asks Stefan what he’s feeling. He says he’s angry that he didn’t know and sad that something he could have had was taken away from him. He says he wants to kill Julien and he’s sorry she went through things alone. She tells him that she took her own life, but became a vampire. She asks him not to tell anyone, especially Lily. She asks him if he would’ve wanted the child and he says yes. He tells her to pick a guest room, but she says she needs to run. Stefan says if Lily gets ahold of the stone, he’ll kill Julien himself.
The heretics say a spell over Julien’s body with the stone on his chest. Julien’s eyes open. He embraces Lily.
Bonnie talks to Damon about how Lily took Elena from them. Damon says burning Julien’s body would have been too good for Lily. He wants her to get Julien back and then break her by ripping his head off. Bonnie says so much for the new leaf, but that he’s doing right by Elena.
