Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson were named the National and American League MVPs Thursday night.

The award is voted on by the Baseball Writers Association of America before the playoffs began.

Harper got all 30 first-place votes for the NL award. At 22, he becomes the fourth youngest MVP in history, the youngest unanimous winner ever, and is the first player to win MVP in Nationals/Montreal Expos history, according to MLB.com.

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was second in NL voting and Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto was third.

Donaldson got 23 first-place votes for the NL award and seven second-place nods. Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was second in the American League voting and Kansas City Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain was third.

"At the beginning of the year that was my goal, from Day 1,” Harper said after winning the award. "Absolutely, to win a World Series and get to the playoffs, but No. 2 to be able to win an MVP and do the things I could to help my team win every single day."

"I was very blessed to be in the situation I was put in," Donaldson said. "I'm very thankful, and I felt like I was able to take advantage of a lot of the opportunities that I had put in front of me. It's been a journey, that's for sure."

Harper, a three-time All-Star, hit .330 with 42 homeruns and 99 RBIs this season, according to the Associated Press. He had a .649 slugging percentage and a .460 on-base average, which led the majors.

Donaldson hit .297 with 41 homeruns and 123 RBIs, which led the American League. He scored 122 runs, which led the majors.

Harper is the third youngest player to win the National League MVP, behind Johnny Bench and Stan Musial. Vida Young is the youngest MLB MVP in history, winning the AL award in 1971 at age 21.
