Authorities in Florida have said that a burglary suspect they were searching for was killed by a large alligator when he picked a pond as his hiding spot.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that police said that when Matthew Riggins was found dead he was missing half of his lower body and part of an arm. He is said to have drown after the 11-foot gator attacked him.

Florida Today noted that Riggins told his girlfriend that he and another person, who is now in custody, were going to rob houses in Barefoot Bay. Officers later responded to a call about the burglaries and Riggins ran off. He is believed to then have picked the pond to hid in unaware that there was a gator waiting for him that had other ideas.

Police said they heard screaming but were unable to determine at the time where it was coming from. His body was discovered 10 days after that.

"When the body was found, it had injuries that were consistent with an alligator attack," Goodyear said. "We had trappers euthanize the gator and when we opened it up, there were some remains inside that were consistent with injuries found on the body."

The burglaries are still being investigated.
