Boko Haram group is suspected in a triple suicide attack that killed at least 27 and injured numerous people at Lake Chad.
The Associated Press reported Paul Manga, Chad’s police spokesperson, said the sucide bombers all appeared to be female. The attack is believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram, the Islamic extremist group in Nigera.
Lake Chad is on the border of four countries including Chad, Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon. The area has been a target of extremists in the past. Earlier this year, Nigerian and Chad forces had worked to drive extremists out of northeastern Niger.
Just last week, troops had begun operations around Lake Chad to take down militants, Cameroon’s government reportedly said.
USA Today reported the attack took place at a market on Koulfoua.
Back in February, Boko Haram militants attacked Chad in a retaliatory attack by crossing the border in Nigeria through Lake Chad itself.
The region is currently in the midst of a state of emergency. Boko Haram has been targeting the area since 2009.
