A petition to ban Donald Trump from entering the U.K. has earned so many signatures that it might be discussed by the Houses of Parliament.
The petition was posted on the U.K. government’s official petition site and has earned over 222,000 signatures. All it takes is 10,000 signatures to earn an official government response. If a petition gets 100,000 signatures, Parliament is supposed to consider debating the issue.
On Monday, Trump said that he wants a “total and complete shutdown” of allowing Muslims into the U.S. after the San Bernardino, California shootings last week. Even before Monday, Trump said he wasn’t against a database of all American Muslims or forcing them to carry special IDs.
In response to Trump’s announcement, the petition notes that, “The UK has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech. The same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the UK.”
The petition continues, “If the United Kingdom is to continue applying the 'unacceptable behaviour' criteria to those who wish to enter its borders, it must be fairly applied to the rich as well as poor, and the weak as well as powerful.”
CNN notes that Trump’s comments have already earned condemnation from the U.K. government. Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement that the comments were “divisive, unhelpful and quite simply wrong.”
