Ethan Hawke is set to join a star-studded cast for the upcoming film Valerian.
While it is unclear what role Hawke will play in Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi thriller, he joins a cast already featuring the likes of Rihanna, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen and Dane DeHaan. Besson recently took to Instagram to announce Hawke’s involvement.
Valerian is an adaption of the popular 1967 graphic novel, created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres, and is set in the 28th century, when humanity has discovered the power of time travel. The graphics novels have been immensely popular, having sold over 10 million copies in 21 languages worldwide, according to Variety.
Not much information has surfaced about the film, other than it will be a massive sci-fi action epic. Besson is no stranger to space epics, having directed The Fifth Element, starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich, which was a commercial and critical hit. Reportedly, Valerian will cost a cool $180 million to make, and will be set in a futuristic world with strange creatures and only five human characters.
It appears that Hawke and Rihanna will be playing human roles, although no further information on their involvement has been divulged thus far.
Besson will be writing and directing Valerian, while Virginie Besson Silla will produce on behalf of EuropaCorp, which will finance, produce and distribute the film.
Valerian is set for a global release in the summer of 2017.
