Fox has decided not to move forward with a television remake of the 1980 John Travolta movie Urban Cowboy.
News of the project surfaced in May, becoming the latest attempt from Paramount Television. However, Deadline reported Friday that, after the pilot was completed, Fox decided not to go forward with it.
The Urban Cowboy series was going to replace country music with Latin music, and the network thought it might make a nice pairing with the hip-hop music of Empire. Alfonso Herrera and Nathalie Kelley starred as the leading couple, who try to find love in Texas.
Other members of the cast included Jim Belushi, Edward James Olmos, Bryana Salaz, Lindsey Gort and Riley Smith.
Paramount TV co-produced Minority Report, which Fox aired this fall. The show concluded after just 10 episodes and isn’t expected to continue.
The original 1980 Urban Cowboy starred Travolta and Debra Winger, who earned two Golden Globe nominations for her role in the film. It was written by Aaron Latham and director James Bridges.
