James Cameron, the director of the biggest movie of all time, has just provided an update on the multiple sequels he has planned.

Cameron told the Montreal Gazette that production on Avatar 2 is coming along nicely, and he's aiming for a Christmas 2017 release date.

"But I don’t consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart," Cameron said. "I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story."

Cameron said that the design of the movie is just about finished, and this was an enormous two-year task. All of the creatures, landscapes and new worlds have been created, and the writing is nearly completed. Cameron hopes shooting will begin early next year.

If you're wondering what has taken so long, it sounds like the delay has been due to the fact that Cameron and his team are basically making the next three Avatar movies at once. The director recently said he hopes to prove with this new trilogy that the success of the original "wasn't just some big fluke."
