Jane The Virgin aired its mid season finale episode and it was mainly about being calm. As Jane dealt with her anger over Rafael lying to her for so long, we saw how she learned to practice being calm thanks to Alba. She would think of four things that made her calm that began with the letters, such as cheese, Alba, lists, and her monkey. Eventually the monkey became Michael, but that stopped working for obvious reasons.

Jane angrily tells her mom and Alba about what Rafael did and she doesn’t know if she should tell Michael, who hasn’t been contacting her anyway. When she begins to yell, it disturbs Mateo so Alba goes to calm him down. Jane tries to breathe herself and opens one of her Advent chocolates, but Xo ate it.

Jane is visiting Santa with Mateo when Rafael comes along. He had seen the date on her calendar, but Jane is still angry. Rafael argues he was protecting his family, but Jane is upset about the lying. Santa tells them not to argue at the North Pole, but Jane tells him to can it. A mother behind them suggests couples’ therapy.

At home, Jane argues Rafael needs the therapy and not her. She doesn’t want to even talk to or see Rafael. Xo offers to pick up Mateo.

Magda and Petra are cleaning blood off the floor. Ivan’s ghost is haunting Petra.

Xo and Rogelio are talking as his new intern, JD, sits beside him. After Xo leaves to get Mateo, Rogelio asks if he should continue being friends with Michael. JD says he definitely should not be friends with him now that the relationship is over.

Meanwhile, Susanna and Michael are telling the police about Mia Alvers, aka Mutter, when Luisa comes in. She tells them that she thinks Mia is alive and then is annoyed to see a cop reading the Solano article.

Jane sees Wesley and is unable to help herself as she goes off on him and tells him she will be going to the dean. She goes to make an appointment and then finds out that half of her tuition wasn’t paid off. In danger of losing her scholarship and finding out that they haven’t heard of it, she calls a number from where the payments came from and hears her father’s voicemail.

Jane goes to see her advisor for advice and he suggests she go for a cash prize since she can’t take a TA position. He tells her she will have to write either historical, sci fi, or a thriller to qualify. The suggestion also comes that she should write all three so he can see which one she does better with.

Rogelio finds Michael at his coffee spot and asks if they can still be friends. While Michael wants to say yes, he tells Rogelio it’s better if they not communicate. This hurts Rogelio deeply.

Michael interviews Luisa with Susanna. Rafael is annoyed to see Michael, who tells him he was on probation. Luisa tells them that she doesn’t remember a lot about her mom, but then tells them she has been in contact with Rose. Rafael is upset to find this out.

Alba talks to Xo and is worried about when her green card will come. Jane comes in with Mateo with a plan for how to deal with paying for the rest of her grad school. She tells them not to tell Rogelio so he won’t stray away from his budget. Rogelio and arrives with JD so they can begin Christmas. He asks about Rafael, but Jane says he is not coming since she took away his access to his calendar.

Rafael is seeing that he is not part of the calendar when he sees his mother. She came because the police were asking about Mia. He tries to ignore her, but she wants to talk. Rafael tells her he has a son now and nothing in the world would ever keep him away from his child.

As they decorate for Christmas, Alba tells Mateo the story of her Christmas angel and one Christmas with her husband, Mateo, before Xo was born. Alba was having trouble staying calm, so Mateo gave her the idea of thinking of important things to her to help her settle down.

Rafael and Jane are exchanging angry instant messages about how to spend the holidays since Rafael doesn’t celebrate Christmas. She doesn’t want him to have Mateo on Christmas and they both get worked up and suggest having lawyers deal with custody.

Jane asks Alba’s immigration lawyer about what she should do if custody comes up. He can’t offer her advice, but he brings up the Solano article and how she could use Rafael’s financial improprieties if he is involved in criminal activity.

Jane goes to find Wesley. She wants information on the source he used for the article. After telling him she could have him expelled for exploiting a classmate’s right to privacy, she asks him for the source. He tells her it was Scott and when she goes to confront him, he gives her the number and address.

Rafael goes to see Petra to find out when her next appointment is. He wonders if she is okay, but Magda claims it is hunger. Petra wants to say something, but Magda warns her that she is still holding things over her head.

Susannah gets Mia’s effects from Luisa, who was flirting with her. Michael is amused as he looks at a photo of Mia with her husband and Luisa. He sees hurricane shutters in the photo and realizes that when they tried to locate Mia, they didn’t take into account the weather and wave patterns at the time. They decide to widen the search area to see if she turned up elsewhere.

Jane imagines herself in a thriller and following Rafael to the unknown address. She eventually calls the shelter and then finds out it is actually a domestic violence charity he has been giving to.

Rogelio tells Xo he put JD through a best friends test by giving him false information, but he failed. Xo tells him if he needs a friend, he can talk to her. He admits that he liked talking to Michael because he could vent angry feelings that still came up over not knowing about Jane for so long. He also sees Xo encouraging Jane to keep Mateo from Rafael and it hurts him. She realizes what he is saying and understands.

Xo goes home and sees Jane. She finds out the truth about the charity and Jane tells her how she feels about everything. Xo encourages her to work things out with Rafael, so Jane messages Rafael and asks about therapy. He responds that he wants to do this.

They go to a therapist that has three of five stars. At first, she thinks she doesn’t need background, but after getting confusing snippets, she asks for the back story.

Susannah and Michael tell Luisa about a theory they have regarding Mia. They feel it is possible that she could have been picked up and placed in a mental institution with no memory. They do this so she won’t know what they really suspect her of.

At the therapist’s office, Jane and Rafael talk in each other’s perspectives. Jane realizes how hurt Rafael was that she chose Michael and he admits that he is upset that Michael let go of the person who killed his father. While Jane is still not okay with what happened, she understands where he is coming from. The therapist then gets Jane thinking when she asks her why lying is triggering for her.

Susannah goes with Luisa as her “wife” to visit Mia at the institution. But when she sees the patient, Luisa realizes it’s not her mother. At the institution later, Michael and Susannah realize Mia must have swapped lives with a nonverbal patient. They see Luisa crying so Michael tells her to comfort her “wife.” Susannah goes over to see her. After finding out who her mother really might be, Luisa wonders if because her mom was a psycho, that was why she was attracted to Rose.

Rogelio reads a bad script and Jane tells him to calm down since JD is coming. But when the door opens, everything turns to science fiction and it turns out to be Jane’s writing. When she shows her writings to her professor, he admits that he misled her about what genres she could write so she could see things in a different perspective. He also tells her a TA position opened up since Wesley is not returning to college.

Rogelio fires JD, but then learns he never said anything about the secret. He reminds Rogelio two manicurists were in the room with them. JD tells Rogelio he doesn’t want to be his friend since he doesn’t know him. After telling him he is a writer, JD shows him his script. After Xo yells at Rogelio to read the script and JD leaves, Jane comes home and shares a moment with Rogelio. She realized she got so worked up over the lying because of missing out on having a father. They tell each other they are thankful to have one another and Jane admits she knows about the scholarship. Rogelio thinks he paid for her full tuition and Jane doesn’t tell him otherwise.

The family is ready to put up the Christmas angel when Xo tells her mom it had broken when the box fell while they were getting ready for the baby’s baptism. But when they open the box, the angel is missing.

At the doctor’s, Petra’s doctor tells her to watch out for high blood pressure. When he leaves, Rafael asks her to talk to him. Petra ends up telling him everything that happened and meekly asks if he hates her. Rafael says no and he knows what is really going on. He tells her they need to get her away from her mother.

An angry Wesley accuses Jane of turning him in, but she didn’t do it. It turns out that her professor did and he is reading the Solano article as he talks to her.

Jane writes a historical romance of a young woman opening the door to her knight. The knight looks just like Michael.

At home, Jane sees a package outside and opens it to find their Christmas angel is fixed. It turns out Michael had taken the angel after the baptism to fix it and hadn’t gotten around to giving it back yet. Rogelio tells them that he loved JD’s script and Alba gets her green card.

But not all is happy for everyone, as Petra is arrested after her mother pins Ivan’s murder on her.
